How we source and verify listings

Who runs Petra's List
Petra's List is run by Keith Motte, who lives in the Temecula Valley. It is named after his late mother-in-law, Petra. Keith is not a doctor, nurse, social worker or care placement agent, and Petra's List does not give medical, legal or financial advice. The site's job is to put official public information about local care in one place, explained in plain words, so families can check it and decide for themselves. Read why Keith started it.
Where listings come from
- Assisted living, board and care, adult day and home care: the California Department of Social Services (CDSS) Community Care Licensing facility data, published on the California Health and Human Services open data portal, and the CDSS Care Facility Search. License number, status, capacity and address come from that record.
- Home health and hospice: the federal CMS Provider Data Catalog, the data behind Medicare Care Compare. Star ratings and quality measures are shown exactly as CMS publishes them (26 providers matched in the current files).
- Memory care: California has no separate memory care license. We list a licensed RCFE under memory care only when the facility's own website advertises memory or dementia care, and we link that page as the source.
- Free programs: official county, state and nonprofit pages, linked on each entry.
- Submitted or claimed listings: details sent by a business through our forms, checked by a person before they appear, and labeled as submitted by the business.
Today the directory holds 215 provider listings: 139 assisted living, 11 memory care, 34 help at home, 13 home health, 14 hospice, 4 adult day.
How we verify
- Every provider page links to its official record so you can check the license yourself, and shows the date we last pulled the data.
- Phone numbers: we keep the number in the official record unless the provider's own website shows a different local number, which we then use.
- Map pins come from the US Census Geocoder or the state record's coordinates. If an address cannot be placed, we leave it off the map instead of guessing.
- We never add reviews, ratings, prices or claims that are not in an official record or on the provider's own site.
- Explanations of license types are general guidance, labeled as such, and are not a statement about any one provider.
Rankings are never for sale
Listing is free. The order and inclusion of listings are never for sale. Every listing is held to the same verification standard. If we ever offer sponsored or featured placement, it will always be clearly labeled "Sponsored" and kept separate from the regular listings. Listings are shown in alphabetical order, and nearby suggestions are sorted by distance. A listing is not an endorsement.
Pages we keep out of search
To avoid thin pages, a city page with fewer than three listings is not submitted to search engines; its listings stay on the regional category page. Provider pages are kept out of search when the official record has too little detail to stand alone, or when something needs re-checking (for example a ZIP code outside the listed city). 36 provider pages are in that group today; they are still available to visitors.
Corrections policy
If something on a listing is wrong, use the Claim or correct this listing link on that page, or suggest a business. A person compares every correction with the official record before publishing it. Corrections to license details must match the state or CMS record; we fix our own errors as soon as we confirm them and update the page's Last updated date.
